Overall, a significant population of Malaysians and Indonesians migrated to the cities in 50 years from 1970 which is expected to keep on rising in the next 20 years whilst the people in Thailand and the Philippines still have relatively fluctuated in the ratio of populations living in the central region over the years until 2020 and predicted to be rising gradually in future.
In detail, the Malaysian population gradually increased from 30% in 1970 to over 40% in 1990 which later rose dramatically to almost 70% in 2020 and will continue to grow up to 80% by 2040. Similarly, the Indonesian population rocketed from almost 13% to 50% in 2020 and is predicted to rise to 60% in the next 20 years.
Moreover, 30% of the population of the Philippines remained almost the same until 1980 which suddenly increased by 20% in 1990 and saw a downfall until 2010 then started growing slowly by 2020 which is now expected to make up to 50% by 2040. The Indonesian population had increased by about 10% in the first 20 years which relatively remained unchanged over 30 years from 1990 and is forecasted to gradually rise by almost 45% in the future.
