Overall, what stands out from the pictures is that in both areas, the noise caused by traffic always had the most profound impact on the residents. Besides, in the suburbs and at nighttime there were less people suffering from noise than in the cities and during the day.
To begin with, during the daytime in the urban and rural areas, about 64 and 34 million citizens were under the influence of traffic noise in daytime; whereas, at nighttime, the corresponding figure was 48 and 24 million, respectively. In addition, the amount of sound pollution as a consequence of trains had a milder impact, there were 10 million affected city and 8 million rural residents during the day and 8 and 6 million every night.
What is more, the number of victims of noise pollution from aircraft was 4 million in towns and 2 million in villages in daylight, at night the figures fell to 1 million in both areas. Finally, there were 1 and 0,25 million people who suffered from industrial noise in urban areas in day and night, respectively; and no rural residents had to put up with this type of noise.
