The two maps illustrate the development of Felixstone in the UK from 1967 to 2001.
Overall, the area had shifted from an agricultural and fishing-based settlement to a predominantly recreation-oriented region. The key changes include the introduction of beaches and new amenities, as well as the complete elimination of the farmland, pier, and marina.
In 1967, a main road which ran from the right to the left in the middle of the map divided the area into two distinct sections. To the north of the main road was farmland located in the top-right corner of the map, while the top-left area of the town was dominated by a golf course. A line of shops was situated on both sides of the high street, which bisected these two regions. Besides this, alongside the coastline from the bottom left to the bottom right were an area of dunes, a hotel with an adjacent cafe, a marina, a pier, and finally a fish market, respectively.
Thirty-four years later, the farmland had been converted into a complex consisting of a hotel, a swimming pool, and two tennis courts. A line of shops which had been situated beside the complex was replaced by apartments. At the bottom left of the map, wind turbines were introduced. Additionally, the hotel was equipped with a new car park. Notably, the marina, the pier, and the fish market were completely removed and transformed into two beach areas, one private and the other public, with the purpose of attracting tourists and generating economic profits.
