The line graph compares changes in three types of crime in Newport city centre between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, burglary and car theft showed a downward trend over the period, while robbery remained relatively stable. In addition, burglary was the most common type of crime throughout the period.
On the one hand, the number of burglaries stood at about 3400 in 2003. After rising to nearly 3700 in 2004, the figure declined sharply and reached a low of around 1200 in 2008. Following this, the number increased slightly to 1500 in 2009 before falling gradually to approximately 1400 by 2012.
Similarly, car theft started at around 2900 in 2003. The figure then decreased moderately to 2000 in 2006. After that, it rose steadily and peaked at just over 3000 in 2010. Finally, the number fell slightly to about 2800 in the final year.
On the other hand, robbery was far less common compared to the other two categories. The figure stood at approximately 600 in 2003 before increasing to 800 in 2005. It then declined to around 500 in 2008. Afterwards, the number rose again to 800 in 2010 before ending the period at roughly 700.
