A country should utilise edible insects as a food source in order to fulfill the need for food to support an increasing population. But, it is believed by a few that insects are unhealthy and also harvesting them would also harm nature in different ways.
In a country where there is a severe requirement for food and there is no availibility of proper food sources, edible insects can be considered as an alternative to feed the people so that they do not become vulnerable to starvation and weakness. They can be used in countries where the population is comfortable and used to consuming edible insects as their staple food. Countries such as Mexico, Peru, Thailand and others having a population which makes use of insects in their diet, can make use of this strategy to tackle food scarcity.
The usage of edible insects as food comes with its share of disadvantages as well. Harvesting edible insects on a large scale is a herculean task to accomplish as the requirements for such a task are unachievable. Even if harvesting them becomes possible, it will be quite difficult to control the damage that nature has to incur due to these activities. The exploitation of a certain species of insects will lead to imbalances in nature in unprecedented ways. Lastly, long-term consumption of any kind of insects can lead to health complications in various individuals as the human digestive system does not the have the mechanism to digest insects naturally.
In conclusion, it is not safe to say that edible insects can be used as a food source and other options need to be explored in order to find what alternatives can be used as a safer and better alternative to edible insects.,
