The table presents data on the underground railway systems in six different cities, including the years they were opened, the length of their routes, and the annual number of passengers.
Overall, London was the first city to establish an underground railway system in 1863, with the longest route of 394 km but not the highest number of passengers at 775 million. Tokyo, opened in 1927, had the highest annual passenger numbers of 1,927 million. Kyoto, the fifth city to establish its underground system before Los Angeles, had the shortest route and lowest number of passengers at 11 km and 45 million, respectively.
In terms of route length, London had the longest with 394 km, followed by Paris with 199 km and Tokyo with 155 km. In contrast, Kyoto and Los Angeles had the shortest route lengths at 11 km and 28 km, respectively. Regarding annual passenger numbers, Tokyo had the highest at 1,927 million, followed by Paris with 1,191 million, and London with 775 million. On the other hand, Washington DC had the lowest annual passenger numbers at 144 million.
While Paris and Washington DC had similar route lengths, Paris recorded a significantly higher number of passengers at 1,191 million compared to Washington DC’s 144 million. Moreover, Paris was the second city with the highest number of passengers after Tokyo, indicating its popularity as an underground transportation mode. It is worth noting that despite being the fifth city to establish its system, Kyoto had the lowest route length and annual passenger numbers among all the cities in the table.
