The table indicates the household percentage in the United States throughout the period of 1790 to 1990.
Overall, households in the US have turned much smaller, from 5.4 members in 1970 to 2.6 members in 1990.
On the one hand, the number of families with 1 – 4 members has experienced an upward trend in 2 centuries. It’s obvious that the number of households with 1 – 2 people skyrocketed in this period, from 3.7% to 24.6% and from 7.8% to 32.2%, respectively. Followed by this were 3 – 4 people in a family, this kind of household increased slightly with a total of 7.2% change, each started at well over 10% of the total number.
On the other hand, the number of families with 5 – 7 people went down throughout 200 years. In 1970, households that had 5 – 6 members significantly decreased from around 27.1% to 9%. Besides, it seems that the US no longer keeps 7 people in a family, as it reached a peak of 35.8% in the beginning and ended up at its trough at just 1.4% in 1990.
