When I was tasked to design a spot welding machine at Biobunny Automotive after implementing the initial prototype of that machine, I found out its weight was too high for a portable application. And its weight in fact was prevent limits their application and portable uses. Although it wasn’t my direct responsibility and I was just tasked with designing the machine, I took on the responsibility and decided to study about various material cores and structures that suits in that application. After a thorough study, ultimately I came up with a solution by with a cost effective solution by proposing a troidal cores as a suitable choice to implement the transformer section. And finally implemented the next version which resulted in reduction of overall weight of the machine by about 30%. Although it wasn’t as I mentioned my direct duties, it gave the company where I work there a competitive edge over its rivals in the market. And in this experience reinforced my belief that engineering isn’t just about meeting the requirements, but also about improving the final product at every possible aspect.
