Well, I would say that they are of greater importance to the elderly rather than to younger generations. Since a large number of old people are out of touch with modern world, they often struggle to use their personal electronics. Therefore, they rely on paper maps in order to navigate. Having said that, the youngsters are pretty much aware of how to use their installed maps on phones. However, phones may fail in a new environment or on a height, and paper maps are a lifeline inside situations. It is often perceived that maps are necessary in order to know your location and find right destinations and navigate in the right direction, but only few realize their historical value. Historic maps represent how world used to be in the past and previous arrangements of borders that are even large maps of the world to facilitate the geography of comprehension and spatial awareness. So what I want to say is that maps are still relevant and remain an integral part of our lives. Maps carry deep meaning and if used properly they can even improve our brain function because it forces us to plan and problem solve.
