I think the role that events and activities play in making a public place popular is that they attract tourists and local residents to come to the place. The events often attract a lot of people to come and enjoy their time, and if they have good feelings about the time they spend in the place, they will have good impressions of the place and will come back. They will generally return the next time. So if the events are well organized and leave good impressions on the tourists, this will make the public place popular.
