Back in the day when I was a young kid who was studying in the third grade of a primary school in a small village. During that time I had no interest in studying at all, especially in studying Vietnamese literature and felt sleepy all the time during literature lessons. As I remembered, once in a weekend when it was raining like cat and dog and I was extremely bored staying at my grandparents house because I couldn’t go outside to play with my cousins as usual. My grandfather suddenly and randomly gave me a little old book called The Green Bird written by a Vietnamese author during the time he was serving for the war against the American army. In my vivid memory, the book includes various of unique and interesting stories about different aspects of life in Vietnam in the past. The most memorable story that I wanted to mention so far is called the Ivory Comp. There was a family of three. The daughter was five years old and she hadn’t seen her father since she was born because her father had to go to serve for the war and when he’d returned home for a couple of days, She couldn’t recognize him because of an ugly mark on his face due to the war. She badly behaved herself, became naughty, and even yelled at her father during the milts. On the last day, the father spent with his family. The young daughter couldn’t hold her tears anymore. She felt regretted about what she had done to her father. She called him dad and asked him to bring her an ivory comb when he returned home again, but that day would never come because the father died in a fight and he gave the comb to his friends so it could be delivered to his daughter. It was such a beautiful and moving story that I will not forget for the rest of my life. Thanks to the story, I can understand about the value of the independence of a nation. There were so many Many people who had to lost their beloved ones for the war. So much sacrifice, devotion and pain was given so that today our generation can live in peace and fulfillment. This change was enormously important to me because it taught me lots of things. To love the beauty of literature, to respect and be grateful to the old generation.
