The story of Pygmalion has always resonated with me. It revolves around a linguist and his voice to transform a flower seller into a polished lady. The flower seller, whom we learn about early on, has a distinctive accent that sets her apart from the genteel society the linguist aims to introduce her to. When they first meet, he attempts to persuade her to elevate her status from a seller to that of a refined lady. He assists her in enhancing her speaking skills, and as a result, she undergoes a significant transformation in both her speech and appearance. By the conclusion of this story, Eliza is undoubtedly a changed individual. However, she struggles with her new identity, feeling as though she has lost part of herself in the process. The aspect that profoundly impacted me is how the author references a mythological tale, twisting it into the narrative of Pygmalion. The original myth tells of a sculptor who, unable to find a woman who embodies his ideal, creates a statue of his perfect woman and plans for her to come to life.
