I’d like to talk about the law that has been recently introduced in my country and I believe it was a very good idea. This law states that all registered nurses are obligated to constantly increase their level of education and their medical knowledge should be as up to date as it is possible. I chose this law as I pursued a career in nursing four years ago and as a healthcare professional I find this law very important and essential for the interest of all patients. So let me tell you about this law in a little more detail. It clearly states that all registered nurses with a valid license have to update the information they acquired during studies. The Act specifies some ways of improving qualifications such as completing postgraduate studies, gaining specialization, participating in conferences and webinars and a certain number of points are earned for each activity. Each registered nurse is required to score 100 points within five years. If the required number of points isn’t collected, the license will be suspended. The law was enforced by the Polish Minister of Health about three months ago in order to force and motivate certain professional groups to expand their knowledge and acquire new skills as many of them apply in their professional practice to outdated medical knowledge. I thought this law was a good idea because in this way the safety of the patients will be significantly increased and as a nurse I strongly believe that the efficiency of nursing care will improve. Up to date medical knowledge is essential to provide direct nursing care to our patients.
