I recently watched Quy Cau, a Vietnamese horror film. I had been hearing about it for 4 months and finally decided to die then. The story was inspired from Vietnamese warlord following a young man who returns to his rural hometown with a pregnant girlfriend after his father’s passing. Upon arrival, they began to encounter a series of disturbing and unexplainable events centered around his family’s old dog, Sartre House, like his girlfriend, Miss Carion, his mother’s strange condition, or a lot of hunting dreams. The supernatural elements in this movie were the common consequences of animal cruelty or ethical violations inherent in the dog meat trade. One sense in particular, they would mean is that where the creators’ shadows emerge from the mist, the tension will entail the same effects. Using traditional Vietnamese instruments created a chilling atmosphere that made me feel like I was stepping into an old legend, really old legend. I think Quy Cau is more meaningful than just an old film. It makes me arouse the richness of our Vietnamese myths and also the way our folklore is powerfully presented. Moreover, the message of protecting animals is actually our best that it conveys to the audiences also impressed me. Therefore, I will highly recommend this movie to others.
