It is a quilt made of fabric, painted with unwelling and developed with sequins, printed fabric strips. It has three panels, like a trip-trip-trip-trip. Each showing the same hall of apartment building, but has three different moments in time. Each panel has a grid of curtains, windows, with black figures pumping their heads out. Below the windows, the artist wrote a story divided into three chapters, the accident, the fire, and the hope coming. I like this work for several reasons, such as its stories, its form of art, and the new discoveries I make every time I look at it. First regarding its story is tell a powerful but heartbreaking tale about a young black boy named A.J. who lost his mother and brothers in a car accident, then his father in a fire and finally returned broken from the war. The quote honestly shows how structural racism and poverty destroy life. Second, when it comes to his foreign art, I love that Wingo choose quoting, a crap associated with women’s domestic work and African American tradition. Just hear the story. challenges the idea that fine art must be oil on canvas. Last but not least, every time I look at it, I notice new details, a face in the window, a sequin, a new line of text. This makes me feel the pain and the resilience of the community. And that’s why Street Stories’ quote is my favorite work of art.
