A piece of art that I really like is a painting by Frida Kahalo which is named as Frida in chopped hair. I first saw it around two years ago when I was taking an online art course by Museum of Modern Art. The work of art is a painting, it is a surrealist painting because Frida was a surrealist artist from Mexico. She sort of paints herself sitting on a chair with cropped hair wearing her husband’s suit. Her husband was also an artist named Diego Rivera. She was madly in love with him for several years and during the tumultuous relationship that she had with her husband, she was really dedicated to him. After certain non-negotiable differences that they had, they split up and they had a divorce after which Frida Kahalo painted herself sitting in a chair and on the first glance it seems like a very regular usual painting. It does not really have a connection to a divorce but people who know about her marriage in detail would know that she was sort of undoing the process of changing herself to be liked by her husband. So her husband really loved her long hair and she used to sport long hair for him. So when she goes through this process of getting detached from him, she reclaims her identity, she crops her hair, chops her hair off to sort of become the person she wants to be instead of conforming to her husband’s ideals of beauty and I think it is a really powerful statement as a piece of art.
