Actually I have heard many amazing and memorable stories. However one particular story that my grandmothers all made during my university years stands up. Back then when I was 10 years old my grandmother shared a story called Jumrat and Kaman, one of the oldest and most traditional tales in Afghanistan. The story is about a family with two step sister who are completely different in character. Jumrat was a kind, hardworking and humble while Kaman was greedy, lazy and selfish. They were stepmother at all Kaman but treated Jumrat poorly, forcing her to do all the chores when the Jumrat was sent to the forest together forever. There she came across an old woman living in a small hut. Despite being child and hungry, Jumrat helped the woman by cleaning the hut and offering her the little food she had. The old woman who turned out to be a magical was moved Jumrat’s kindness and rewarded her with a full of gold, a basket. When Jumrat returned home, her stepmother and Kaman were shocked and demand to know how she had gotten the treasure. After hearing the story, Kaman decided to visit the forest herself but unlike Jumrat, she was rude and demanding treating the old woman with pent-up. As a result, instead of receiving reward, Kaman was cursed and misfortune followed her wherever she went. The story taught me that kindness and humility always lead to positive outcomes while greed and ignorance bring bad consequences. My grandmother’s story telling made it unforgettable and even now I clearly remember every day of her story.
