I went to France for my Erasmus to study political science and international relations. When I first landed in France, I realized that France was totally different from my home country, Turkey. I needed some time to adapt to the social, cultural, and daily environment there. I remember that when I first entered my accommodation, there was a common kitchen, and I noticed there were a lot of people from different backgrounds and countries. I struggled with the French culture, language, and the international community. I found that to engage in the culture, I needed to make friends, not only with French people but also with international students. I did it. I made a lot of friends from all over the world, including some Turkish friends, which helped me feel at home. I also started internalizing the French culture rather than just feeling alienated.
