A difficult situation that I've ever experienced was when we received a shipment that had gone out of range, meaning it had experienced a temperature excursion. It was a 15 to 25 shipment, but the temperature readings, recordings were at 30, meaning it had been exposed to high environmental conditions. The possible options were either to take back the shipment using the same courier back to the sender or to receive the shipment and quarantine it. I made the decision to quarantine it as well because contrary to our normal procedures in the company, whereby when you receive a shipment with an excursion, you have to send it back to the sender for them to do an investigation. I made this decision because it being in December, I knew it would be so hard or it would be difficult to reach the sender at that time, so I will receive the shipment, quarantine it, and also record the non-conformity in our system. This situation taught me that sometimes following the rules may not be the right decision. I can use my own personal decision to make the right judgment, especially when the decision will affect the health and the safety of the patients.
