This tradition is practiced yearly, mostly on December holidays on young boys as they graduate from primary school to secondary school or as they transition from childhood to childhood. This tradition has been with our community, that is the Nandi community for thousands of years. I cannot pinpoint exactly when it began or for how long it has been practiced, but it is estimated that it has been through generations since the coming in of the Nandi community in Tukanya. This tradition is a community event and it’s participated by all members of the society. But mostly it is done by men since it is a monthly affair. Women are usually there just to support the young men and to escort them. them but the rest of the event is done by the young men and their fathers. During these meaningful occasions, the participants normally stay in forested areas or isolated areas for a period of one month where after the initial circumcision takes place, they They take time to feel for a few weeks and then the rest of the month is spent on learning about our community and learning cultural values as well as what it means to be a man. This tradition is very meaningful especially to me because as a woman who likes to feel secure in an environment where men have been taught how to lead, have been taught how to be responsible members of society, and how to be responsible husbands and wives. Hence, I do believe that this tradition is very important.
