One of my favorite books from childhood is "Nanaugi," which translates to "The Traveling Cat." Written by Hiro Arikawa, this book tells the story of a cat named Nana and his owner, Satoru, as they embark on a journey across various regions of Japan. When Satoru can no longer care for Nana, he asks his old friends to take care of the cat. Nana accompanies Satoru to visit each friend at different locations. This journey is not just a geographical movement, but also a profound exploration of the hidden corners, pain, and healing in the souls of Satoru's friends. The story offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between animals and humans, showcasing Nana's deep insights and observations of Satoru's friends. The characters, from Kosuke with his dutiful father, to Jō with his family, to Sui with her insecurities, to Naro with his regret and unspoken pain, are all deeply affected by Nana's presence. By the end of the journey, Nana not only finds solace and reliance with his new friends, but also participates in a psychological journey for them to confront themselves and find their true selves. The book delivers a powerful message about leaving a lasting impact despite life's suffering and injustice. "The Traveling Cat" is a story about finding hope and searching for life's meaning, emphasizing that even though life may end, love and hope will endure forever. I truly hope to have the chance to read this book again in the future.
