Today I'd like to share the experiences of my grandfather. Born sometime early in the 1900s, my grandfather was an uneducated young man, and by the time he was supposed to fend for himself, he went to look for a job as a factory worker. Back then, the railway line that runs across Zimbabwe was still under construction, and the adverts would usually be posted where the railway company was looking for employees to work in the laying out of the line. My grandfather was fortunate among others to get the job, and this is the job that he worked for almost 40 years of his life. The job entailed clearing the land using bulldozers. It involved laying out the hardwood timber on top of which the steel line would be laid. Waking up very early and working for hundreds of hours, the workers would toil in the hot Zimbabwe sun and would knock off almost at night. Now, looking at where I am, this is the kind of job that I wouldn't want to do because, firstly, the job involved a lot of manual labor. There was no skill required, and additionally, the workers had little resting time. As a professional, I would prefer jobs that require some form of skill, and I would make sure my children also get some training to become skilled workers.
