In my opinion, moving from one career to another largely depends upon the field in which it is done. If shifting careers into a complementary field such as moving from working in finance and going into accounts or vice versa, that is a relatively easier change because people already have the understanding about how the other field works and they have already gained knowledge and information about that field earlier in their education. However, when moving from a drastically different field such as moving from humanities into sciences, for example, moving from becoming a history teacher, from being a history teacher to pivoting into information technology and software engineering roles would be rather challenging task because people lack enough work experience on their resume and they also need to compete with people who have studied in university for software engineering. Further more than lack of background in the field also makes companies early check that because they lack the relevant walk experience. Thus it is rather highly subjective and highly depends on the career shift which a person is making which determines the difficulty of switching.
