In the weeks leading to the events, my English teacher who was also a debate coach helped us research, organize and practice our delivery. We spent hours rehearsing after school and that preparation gave me a lot of confidence. On the day of the competition, the school was packed with students, teachers and the judging panel. When it was my turn to speak, I couldn’t feel my heart racing, but as I started the words just flowed. I made my points clearly, maintained eye contact and even managed to answer the judge’s question without hesitation. When the results were announced and our score was declared the winner, the entire team jumped in celebration, I felt a real sense of achievement. And because we had won, and because I had overcome my field speaking in front of a large audience. It was memorable to me because it taught me the value of preparation, teamwork, and self-confidence. Lessons I still carry with me today.
