Well, as far as I'm concerned, I would say that academic subjects would be more useful for students in school. The academic subjects will help them to enter university successfully and find a good job. Nowadays, it is much more important than some practical skills that aren't really useful in everyday life. For example, I know a lot of people who didn't know how to use general subjects, for example, in the kitchen, but they are really successful people who earned a lot of money and who have a giant salary, and from my point of view, it is the right way to study.
