It's a complex question. While advertising is ubiquitous and often intrusive, I don't think it directly dictates what people buy. Think about it: we're bombarded with ads on YouTube, before videos, during videos, even on our social media feeds. It can be frustrating, especially when you're eager to watch something and an ad pops up. People get annoyed because they want to consume the content they're interested in, not the advertisement. However, companies pay for these ads, so YouTube needs to make them profitable. This often means making them unskippable, which can be infuriating. But, does it really influence our buying decisions? I think it's more about awareness. Advertising can introduce us to new products or remind us of existing ones, but ultimately, the decision to buy rests with the individual consumer. We weigh factors like price, quality, and personal need before making a purchase. So, while advertising can be a powerful tool, it's not the sole driver of consumer behavior.
Actual audio transcript (What native speakers are likely to hear):

Well, I don’t think that advertising influences what people buy, because advertising is, uh, very, very stressful sometimes. Uh, I say it because, uh, uh, when you try to watch a video on YouTube, for example, then you are stressed by the advertising that comes before the video or during the video. So you are interested on the video, but you are not interested on the advertising. Them, people get angry because they, um, they want’watch the video, but the advertising can be skipped because, uh, uh, uh, advertisement, uh, is, uh, something that you pay for. So, I mean, companies pay YouTube to publish their advertisement. So YouTube, uh, must, uh, make advertising unskippable. This can, uh, make, uh, people very mad. So it doesn’t influence that.
