As far as I understand, people have more time on holiday and want to spend that time with family members and relatives. They especially choose big cities where there are generally a lot of tourists, particularly during holidays. They are ready to spend their money, and the local authorities know this and set higher prices on everything. Hotels are full of people, streets are crowded, and local supermarkets and entrepreneurs know they can earn money from tourists. They wait for a special season or day when they can benefit from it.
