I'd say most people in my country live in apartments or blocks of flats. I personally live here, but many people also prefer living in detached houses. I know many who find it attractive to live in detached houses.
It depends on the weather because I live in a small town near the beach, so people usually prefer living near the sea from April to May. On the other hand, they move to the city when the weather is cold, so they usually live in an apartment from October to March.
