As per my experience, that must be the first time they get used to spending it. You know kids are likely to go overboard the first time they start to handle it. And when they don't have a penny to rub together, that's when they realize the significance of money.
I don't think there is a particular age, as it varies depending on their upbringing. Typically, children begin to understand the value of money between the ages of 5 and 7. By this age, they realize that money is needed to buy things and must be earned or saved.
