The line graph shows how the percentage of elderly people in the United States who did five different leisure activities changed from 1980 to the 2010s. Overall, hiking and using the Internet became much more popular, while watching TV stayed the most popular activity during most years.
Firstly, hiking increased the most among all activities. In the 1980s, only 20% of older people went hiking. This number rose steadily over time and reached 80% in the 2010s. Watching TV was already popular at the start, at 60% in the 1980s. It increased slightly to 70% in the 2000s, then fell a little to 65% in the final period, but it was still very popular.
Secondly, reading showed changes over time. It began at 30% in the 1980s and went up to 40% in the 1990s. After that, it dropped to 20% in the 2000s, before rising again to about 60% in the 2010s. Going to the theatre stayed fairly stable, moving between 30% and 50% across the years. On the other hand, using the Internet started as the least popular activity, at around 5%, but increased steadily and reached 50% in the 2010s. This shows that older people became more interested in technology.
