The line graph illustrates the proportion of Australian export with four nations over a 22-year span.
Overall, the four nations displayed divergent trends over the 22-year period. While exports to China and India rose noticeably – with India experiencing a period of stability – the US fluctuated considerably, and Japan followed a declining trajectory.
Both China and India rose significantly, albeit to varying degrees. The former increased modestly from almost zero percent to 5% in 2000. The figure, then, rose steeply to around 11% in 2005, before skyrocketing to around 26% in the final year. By contrast, the figure for the latter experienced a period of stagnation until 2000. The export level in India grew substantially to a peak of 7% in 2010, before declining to 5% in the final year.
By contrast , the figures for Japan and US were more volatile – with US fluctuating sharply, while Japan declined gradually. Although the export level in US experienced a dip in 1995, it subsequently recovered, returning to the same level in 1990 by 2000. After recovering to around 11%, the figure plummeted to 5% in 2010, before climbing to around 7% in 2012. In contrast, the figure for Japan stood at under 30% at the outset. By 2005, it witnessed a fall, declining to just below 25% and experienced a period os stability until the end of the period.
