Overall, countries in South Asia had the highest illiteracy rates regardless of gender. In general, men had lower illiteracy rates than women.
To begin with, in South Asia region, almost 55% of the women and around 35% of the men cannot read. In Arab states, almost half of the women population litirate while majority of men can read. Followed by Sub-Saharan Africa region with almost half of women illiterate while this rates was only 30% for men.
The other three region had almost 3 times lower rates than the others in the last year. Firstly, in East Asia and Oceania, only 10% of men were unable to litirate while this number was two times bigger for women. In Latin America and Caribiean countries, the rates for both female and male were similiar with around 11%. Lastly, 95% of the population was illiterate regardless of gender in developed countries.
