At first glance, the chart shows that the number of participants increased dramatically over the period. Additionally, more men participated the Olympics than women from 1924 to 2012.
There were approximately 3000 people who entered the Olympics in 1924. A closer examination of the graph reveals that the number of participants grew gradually to around 7000 in 1984 (after 60 years) and tremendously rose to around 11000 in 2012 (after 28 years). The number of participants increased about four times from 1924 to 2012.
Both numbers of male and female athletes rose over the period. However, there is a noticeable difference: the size of female participants increased the most from around 100 in 1924 to around 5000 in 2012. Meanwhile, the number of men entering the Olympics grew from 3000 in 1924 to around 6000 in 2012.
