Overall, over the given period the amount of children who are traveling to school by car increased drastically, while cycling lost it’s popularity among the pre-teenagers.
Getting to the details, the amount of car passengers among children raised more than twofold from just above 4 millions in 1990 to roughly 11 millions in 2010. On the contrary, the number of children walking to school dropped from more than 12 millions in 1990 to 6 millions in 2010. A similar decrease can be seen among cyclists – from slightly higher than 6 millions in 1990 to 2 millions in 2010. The amount of schoolers that use both walking and traveling by bus fell from almost 6 millions to approximately 3 millions over the given period. Similarly, the number of kids traveling by bus decreased from roughly 7 millions to about 5 millions.
