Overall, it is clear that the number of households in rented accommodation saw a downward trend, whereas that of families in owned houses experienced an opposite trend. 1971 marks the point when the latter percentage overtook the former one.
Looking at the information in more detail, we can see that in 1918, around 22% of households were living in owned accommodations, while 77% had to pay rent. Apart from a period of stability between 1939 and 1953, the latter figure fell gradually over the years, reaching a low of just over 30% in 2001 before rising again to 36% by the final year.
On the other hand, even though the ownership of homes was the lowest in the first year, the figures increased considerably, picking at just under 70% in 2001. By the final year, this percentage fell slightly to end at approximately 64%.
