Overall, it is evident that while there was a general similarity in the sales of each genres at the beginning of the period, a remarkable change was witnessed with a significant differentce in people’s preferences over the reported period.
Specifically, the sales of adult fiction saw a significant increase to 45%, doubling that of 1972 to become the most favorable among all book genres. Although not as intense, there was also a consistent upward trend in sales of children’s fiction, rising from a similar 20% in 1972 to 25% in 2012.
In contrast, the genre of biography, despite starting at a similar 20% to that of adult and children’s fictions, experienced a notable decline to only 8% at the end of the period. Similarly, the sales percentage of other types of book was halved after 40 years, falling from 25% to 12%. Sales of travel books fluctuated over the given period, rising from 15% to 18% in 1992 and dropping to only 10% in 2012.
