The three pie charts illustrate the proportion of five categories of books sold by a bookseller from 1972 to 2012.
Overall, the sales of adult fiction and children’s fiction underwent an upward trend, whereas the opposite was true for the percentage remaining categories over the 40-year period. Besides, the highest figure can be seen in the number of adult fiction and children’s fiction throughout the years, except in 1972.
The two categories comprise adult fiction and children’s fiction books, which account for above 40% of total sales in the bookstore. Starting at 20% in 1972, adult fiction books substantially reached the highest sales at 45% in 2012 after a gradual increase of 5%, securing the top position since 1992. This closely resembled the figure for children’s fiction, which witnessed a gradual escalation of 5% between 1972 and 2012.
Regarding the remaining categories, the figures for their sales were no greater than 25% and decreased to varying extents. Biography, which registered 20% in 1972, decreased significantly to 8% in the final year. Likewise, travel and other books had 15% and 25% of sales in the initial years before shrinking to 10% and 12%, respectively.
