The pie charts illustrate the number of language that can be spoken by the British students in an England university in 2000 and 2010. Overall, there was an increasing number of students who developed literacy in more languages.
Firstly, monolingual students who can only speak their mother tongue reduced by half, from 20% in 2000 to 10% ten years later. Within this period, there was also a 5% increase, from 15% to 20%, in the students who could converse in two other languages.
In addition, more students were bilingual in 2010, with the ability to speak in English and one other language. However, the preference of the additional language changed in the two studied years, with the exception of German, which the figure maintained at 10%. In relation to this, there were 5% more students who started to speak French (30% in 2000 and 35% in 2010) or other unspecified language (15% in 2000 and 20% in 2010). Conversely, French speakers declined by 5% with 15% of the students spoke this language in 2000 but only 10% of them still did the same in 2010.
