The diagram illustrates how a Monarch butterfly reaches an adult stage from an egg.
Overall, there are five phases of the life of a Monarch butterfly. The whole process usually takes up to six months, after that the it flies migrates to the north.
First, the eggs are laid on milkweed by a female. It takes about 14 days before a newly hatched larva is developed into an attachment of larva. In this phase it mostly act as a caterpillar on milkweed. In next ten days, the attachment of larva is converted into chrysalis, which stays in the hanging condition like previous stage.
At the fourth stage, the chrysalis is transformed into an adult and migrate towards the south, which takes about six months. On arrival of a favourable season, they travel towards the northern areas. Upon reaching the destination, they are ready to breed and lay new eggs and the cycle continues.
