The diagram illustrates the process by which aluminium is recycled.
Overall, the process consists of several stages, beginning with the collection of used cans, and ending at the consumer stage. The process involves collecting discarded items before they are recycled thoroughly and processed into reusable containers. Notably, approximately 74% of aluminium cans are recycled in the UK, allowing the process to be repeated continuously.
At the outset, waste cans are collected from designated recycling points. Having been transported to a specialised recycling facility, they undergo a thorough cleaning and sorting process, after which they are compressed and crushed into smaller pieces.
At this point, the crushed cans are subjected to an intense heating and melting process. Once this is complete, the aluminium is rolled into sheets measuring approximately 2-5mm to 6mm in thickness, after which the aluminium is shaped into new containers. Finally, the newly manufactured beverage cans are ready to be distributed for consumer use.
