The line chart illustrates the rate of birth, death, and population growth in Scotland from 1940 to 2020.
Overall the population growth rate was correlated with the birth rate. Despite fluctuating, the percentage of birth and population growth generally decreased, while death rate remained stable in most of the time.
The birth and population growth had an almost similar pattern in Scotland. The birth rate was at the highest proportion in 1940, standing at 2.5%. After fluctuating twice ranging 2.5% and 1% between 1940 and 1970, the proportion of birth decreased considerably to more than 0.5% in 1990. Then, this figure fluctuated around 0.5%, and levelled off at 0.5% for a decade to 2020. The percentage of population growth declined from less than 1% in 1940 to 0.5% in 1945. Whereas this figure increased significantly in 1955, reaching a peak of 1.5%, it went down considerably to zero percent over a period of half century.
The death rate began with 0.5% in 1940. By 1960, this figure had declined substantially to 0.5%. After levelling out for a period of 50 years, the proportion of death rose slightly to more than approximately 0.7% in 2020.
