The statistics display the proportion of passengers who travelled by plane for four distinct purposes at four particular British airports in 2016.
Overall, in the assessed year, air travellers with recreational purposes on holidays were recorded to lead the list at Gatwick Airport, while it was the case for those visiting friends and family at the remaining airports.
Looking first at Gatwick Airport, air travelers with holiday purposes took the lead, accounting for over a half at 54%. The second place belonged to the purpose of visiting friends and family, at 30%, which was double the proportion of those travelling for business purposes. This left the remaining 2% to the other category.
As for the remaining airports, visiting friends and family commanded the biggest share in all airports surveyed at around 50%, recorded in Luton and Stansted airports and nearly 40% at Heathrow Airport. The second most stated reason for travel was holiday purposes, with the figures ranging from 33% to 36%, while travel for business was relatively lower, under 15% at Luton and Stansted Airports and over a quarter at Heathrow Airport. Unlisted reasons maintained a minor share of under 5%.
