The graph provides data on the proportion of the urban population in four Asian countries from the year 1970 to 2020, along with projected figures for 2030 and 2040.
The data shows that Malaysia has had the highest proportion of urban population compared to the other countries throughout the years. According to the predictions, this trend is expected to continue in the upcoming years as well. The projection suggests that the urban population of Thailand will be just under 50% in 2040.
The urban population in the Philippines showed fluctuations since 2010, but it is anticipated that it will exceed 50% by 2040. In Indonesia, the percentage of the total population residing in urban areas was around 15% in 1970, which dramatically increased to 50% in 2020. It is projected that the proportion of the Indonesian population living in urban areas will rise to a little over 60% in 2040.
Although Malaysia had only 30% of its population living in urban areas in 1970, this figure increased significantly to over 70% from 1990 to 2020. The projection suggests that the estimated percentage of people living in urban areas in Malaysia will reach around 85% by 2040.
