The chart below illustrates the percentage of individuals who reside in cities between 1970 and 2020, alongside with estimates for the year of 2030 and 2040. Overall, it is apparent that the rate of population in cities will increase in the future in all four nations, which are the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
In the Philippines, the percentage had shown a surge between 1980 and 1990, which was from around 30 percent to almost 50 percent. Despite the recent downfall from 1990 to 2010, the rate will rise up to 80 percent in 2040.
The rate of people living in cities in Malaysia has a continually increasing trend, including a sharp rise between 1990 and 2010. At the start of that period, the rate was around 40 percent. However, it went up to almost 70 percent after 20 years. The prediction says that the rate will reach to 80 percent, hitting the highest number among four countries.
In the case of Thailand, the percentage had gradually increased from the year of 1970 to 2020, eventually seen as more than 40 percent of population will live in cities in the future.
Last but not least, the rate of people who live in cities in Indonesia started at the lowest in 1970, only accounting slightly more than 10 percent. However, the percentage had risen, and the estimate says that around the half of the whole population in Indonesia will live in cities in 2030 and 2040.
