Overall, it can be seen that there was an increase in the population of city dwellers in all four countries. Furthermore, Malaysia had the highest percentage of city population.
Looking at the data sets in more detail, it is evident that the city population percentages of Malaysia and the Philippines both stood at about 30% in 1970. Then Malaysia experienced a substantial growth that led to roughly 75% by 2020. Whereas Philippines fluctuated between 35% and 45%. Thailand’s percentage was at almost 19% compared to Indonesia’s 15%. However, the percentage of city dwellers of Thailand Increased rapidly, reaching almost half of the total population. Whereas Thailand’s percentage rose to only around 30%.
By 2040 Malaysia will likely have the highest percentage of people living in cities by 2040, surpassing 80%. Followed by Indonesia’s 65%. The percentages of Philippines and Thailand are expected to be approximately 55% and 50%.
