The line graph illustrates the proportion of Asians living in cities in four countries: Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia between 1970 and 2020, and gives predictions for the following 20 years.
Overall, all four countries show an upward trend throughout the years. The population of Malaysians living in non-rural areas has the most noticeable rise, while the Indonesians’ figure also went from the lowest in 1970 to the second-highest in 2040.
In 1970, the rates for citizens in both Malaysia and the Philippines started at around 30%. However, the amount of Thais who chose city life increased to just over four-fifths of the whole population. Controversially, the percentages for Filipinos fluctuated between the starting point and its peak of 50% in the future, which is half of the population.
The line demonstrating for Thailand started at around 20% and doubled over the period shown. Moreover, the proportion of Indonesian city dwellers went from approximately 12% to 60% after 70 years. The year 2000 marked the point at which it overtook the figure for Thailand.
