The line graph illustrates how many Australian exports moved to four different countries between 1990 and 2012
Overall, despite some fluctuations, there was an increase in the proportion of exports to the US and China, with the most dramatic rise being seen in the figure for China to become the most popular choice from 2010 onwards.
The share of Australian shipments moved to China started at just 5% in 1990, after which it saw a significant increase, reaching a peak of over 25% in 2012. Similar changes, but to a lesser extent, can be seen in the figure for India, which experienced fluctuation until 2000, before gradually decreasing to around 7% in 2019, and a final drop to just 5% in the last year.
About 27% is the proportion of exports went to Japan, followed by a considerable decline to just 17% in 2012. Meanwhile, the percentage of Australian shipments to the US stood at nearly 12%, after which it followed a downward trend, fluctuating slightly before dropping below around 5% in the final year.
