The line graph demonstrates the population figures for various type of turtles in India from 1980 to 2012.Units are measured as index.
Overall, olive ridley turtles saw the most significant increase in population over the period and it became the dominant specie in 2012. In contrast, leatherback turtles experienced a steady decline.Meanwhile, green turtles and other species remained fairly consistent, with only minor fluctuations.
The number of leatherback turtles initially rose slightly, reaching just over 110 in the late 1980s. However, this upward trend did not last, as their population gradually declined over the following years, falling to around 60 by 2012. Green turtles showed less dramatic changes. Their figures began at just below 110 and, despite small ups and downs throughout the period, dropped modestly to about 90 in the final year.
In comparison, olive ridley turtles followed a different pattern. Their population increased steadily from 1980, eventually peaking at close to 140 in the late 1990s and remaining the highest of all species until the end of the period. The remaining group, referred to as “other species,” also showed slight variations but generally maintained an upward trend, ending as the second-largest group in terms of numbers.
