The line graph illustrates how numbers of two type of enrollment changed in US college over the period from 1980 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that both types of enrollment had an upward trend with public enrollment leading throughout the whole period.
At the beginning of the period, public enrollment number stood at 9.46 million, after which it slightly rose to 9.48 million by 1985. It then continued to increase reaching 11.75 million in 2000. From 2000, public enrollment significantly grew from 11,75 million students to 15,14 million over 10 years.
In contrast, private enrollment started at around 2.64 million and increased steadily until 2010 year. Nevertheless, at the same time the decline of participants occurred in public and private colleges. By 2020, private enrollment had fallen to 5.14 million. Similarly, public enrollment experienced a dramatic decline from 15.14 million to 13.88 million toward the end of the period.
