The pie charts compare the age distribution of visitors from the UK to Spain in 1983 and 2003.
Overall, in both years, the majority of tourists were middle-aged, though their proportion declined over the period. By contrast, the shares of younger and older visitors rose noticeably, with the most dramatic increase seen in those aged 55 and over.
In 1983, the 34-54 age group dominated, accounting for exactly half of all visitors. The second largest group was 25-34 years, at 20%. Meanwhile, those aged 55 and above represented 16%, slightly more than children aged 0-15 (10%). The smallest share belonged to the 16-24 age group, at only 4%.
By 2003, several shifts were evident. The proportion of 34-54 year olds fell to 35%, while the 25-34 group also dropped, to 12%. In contrast, the percentage of the oldest age group almost doubled to 26%, becoming the second-largest category. Younger visitors also increased: children rose modestly to 12%, and those aged 16-24 more than tripled, reaching 15%.
